Rural Crime Team
The Special Constabulary Rural proactive team was formed in August 2015 and is based at Ollerton Police station.
The team currently has six members and works proactively within the rural communities of Nottinghamshire alongside Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs).
They are trained to deal with rural crime issues and the sometimes complex laws surrounding these issues, looking at rural crime patterns and providing community engagement, reassurance and problem-solving designed to meet each community’s needs.
The team are intelligence-led and focus on offences which impact upon forestry, conservation areas, agricultural land and rural communities in general. They investigate crimes committed against wildlife, such as cruelty, animal-baiting and poaching. They have knowledge of rural crimes that range from theft of livestock, drug dealing and cannabis cultivation to theft from churches and churchyards, fishing and poaching. Reduction and prevention of criminal damage to graveyards, monuments, barns, fences, fields and crops will likewise fall within their responsibilities.
The team’s training has been delivered by representatives from national bodies such as The Nottinghamshire Police Wildlife Crime Unit, The National Farmers Union, Historic England and others agencies which support the vitality and protection of the countryside.
Our Rural Specials have access to and are trained to drive 4x4 off-road vehicles which help them access areas that cars cannot get to.
Our Rural Special Constables have formed good working relationships with the Environment Agency and other partners such as the NFU within Nottinghamshire.
While their training will help them to do the job of policing the countryside, effective engagement and interaction with community members, environmental, farming and conservation organisations is key, particularly delivering crime prevention and early intervention messages.
