Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

Picture
We know that criminals often travel into our rural communities from surrounding counties or other parts of Nottinghamshire. For this reason, following a successful pilot in Ashfield, funding has been secured for a ring of 24-hour Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in Bassetlaw. This will be supported by policing operations and mobile ANPR vans.

The cameras are only used to monitor activity thought to be connected with cime in the area and Ashfield saw a burglary reduction of approximately 50% on the previous year following the pilot.

Working closely with Trading Standards, the ANPR data will be used to target rogue traders and those who target the elderly and vulnerable through distraction offences.

"There is a common perception that rural crime is less significant than that occurring in cities and towns.  The impact of rural crime is just as serious as it is elsewhere which is becoming an increasing problem as austerity bites and as police resources are stretched thinner."

Paddy Tipping
Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner
